Asian Short Film & Video Competition

The Asian Short Film & Video Competition has garnered attention, not only because it is the only competition section of the IWFFIS, but also because it has consistently demonstrated the power of Asian women¡¯s cinema. In 2008, a total of 263 films from 13 countries were submitted and the 19 films chosen as finalists will be screening in the Asian Short Film & Video Competition Section of the 10th IWFFIS. Cash awards and trophies will be given to the winning films, selected by jury, as a way of encouraging women¡¯s film professionals and supporting the development of women\'s cinema. Former awardees of the Asian Short Film and Video Competition include such talented Korean woman filmmakers as Jeong Jae-eun, Park Chan-ok, Yun Jae-yeon, and Jang Hee-sun.

¹Ú³²¿Á ¿µÈ­»ó

Park Namok Award has been newly established in 2008. The award honors the Korean woman director who has most stimulated the Korean film industry. The winner is selected by the IWFFIS Executive Committee among the directors of films released in the last year. As a result of deliberation over the theatrically released films from February 2007 to February 2008, Yim Soon-rye, the director of Forever the Moment has been chosen as the first awardee. Yim Soon-rye is highly admired for showing the confidence of Korean woman filmmakers by creating a film which invigorated the depressed Korean film industry and movingly portrayed women¡¯s friendship and solidarity.

Documentary Ock Rang Award

Organized by IWFFIS and supported by the Ock Rang Cultural Foundation, which has been noted for its close involvement with progressive Korean cultural activities, the ¡®Documentary Ock Rang Award¡¯ is a fund that supports documentaries by women filmmakers. The award was established in 2002 for the purpose of promoting documentaries by women filmmakers and calling attention to women¡¯s issues. The awardee is given a year for production and a world premier screening at the following IWFFIS. The 10th International Women¡¯s Film Festival in Seoul will give a world premiere screening of 3xFTM (Collective for Sexually Minor Cultures pinks, Kim Ii-rhan) which was the 2007 recipient of Documentary Ock Rang Award. At the closing ceremony, the festival will give the 7th Documentary Ock Rang Award to Lesbian Political Challenge (tentative) (Hong Ji-yoo, Han Young-hee). 15 million won will be awarded to support more than one film.

Women¡¯s News Award

To encourage feminist practice in film, Women¡¯s News established the Women¡¯s News Award. The award and trophy are given to a group or an individual who has demonstrated feminist action through visual media, as chosen from among the films screened in notable section by the Women¡¯s News every year. Trophy and Cash Award 2 million won
