SYNOPSIS

This short, improvised fictional film is affectionately called Yugantar¡¯s ¡°hit¡± film. In the midst of the very active autonomous women¡¯s movement in India, Yugantar collaborated with the research and feminist activist collective Stree Shakhti Sanghatana, provoked by the urgency to broaden discourses and political practice on domestic violence.

PROGRAM NOTE

The more Lalita¡¯s marriage gets worse, the more a subjective view is obtained by the camera that follows her expressions and movements. Although the camera has never missed her before, it is getting far away and lower, passing her behind the wall, drawing back from the messy space. Capturing the trace of home labor piled up on the floor and Lalita sitting far away, like everything is exhausted, the shaky camera visualizes the triple burden of her home, work, and studies. In the end, Lilita¡¯s voice-over unfolds the narrative of Rama, a friend who became independent earlier than she. And a woman¡¯s personal story extends to the power of women¡¯s solidarity beyond inner monologue. [A, HAEPARI]

Yugantar, India¡¯s first feminist film collective, was founded by Deepa Dhanraj, Abha Bhaiya, Navroze Contractor, and Meera Rao. From 1981 to 1983, Yugantar developed projects in partnership with existing or developing women¡¯s groups around the country. Rich synergies between their activist and creative practices mark Yugantar¡¯s films as a potent chapter of feminist filmmaking, inspiring reflections on political friendship and other modes of contemporary coexistence.
