Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, SIWFF prepared the special program that aims to rethink women's film festivals and women's film history with the keyword ¡°RE:Discover,¡± by showcasing some of the masterpieces of women's films and feminist classics that led the cinematic discourse and aesthetics of each era. This section introduces women's films that have been presented at SIWFF or inspired women filmmakers. This will be a place of commemoration and retrospection and also an opportunity to revisit the problem consciousness of the time and confirm the track of the evolution of female narratives through works considered good examples of women's films. Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) draws attention again by ranking first in the ¡°The greatest film of all time¡± survey of the film magazine Sight and Sound in 2022. The feminist masterpiece in the 1970s reveals the sexual oppression and economic extortion of women through the daily lives of a housewife. Lizzie Borden's Born in Flames (1983) is regarded as the most radical film in American independent film history in the 1980s, which shows women's struggle against discrimination and violence that persist even in the post-revolutionary near-future society. Agnès Varda's Kung-Fu Master! (1988) carefully depicts the psychology of a middle-aged woman who falls into a feeling of love that is difficult to be accepted in social norms and the conventional prejudice against women. Through Marleen Gorris' Antonia's Line (1995), the audience can meet a matricentric utopia based on equality and respect. In addition to the above works, Kelly Reichardt's Meek's Cutoff (2010), which reconstructs the Western genre into a female narrative, will also be screened at the SIWFF 25 Special. Among Asian features, a recently restored Unmarried Mothers (1980) by Taiwanese director Lee Mi-mi will be screened as an international premiere. And Jealousy Is My Middle Name (2002) by director Park Chan-ok, which exposes in-depth insight into the relationship dynamics and power between characters, will meet the audience in a new way.
