Women Making Art: Shouts & Whispers is focusing on films that looks back on the life and work of women who persistently ¡°shout and/or whisper¡± to the world through artistic creations such as literature, music, fine arts and etc., and that with the perspectives and aesthetic attempts of female film creators representation. Among the latest films of female directors, works that illustrate the lives and portraits of female artists working in various art fields, whether real or fictional, continue to stand out. The story of a female artist who is active as an artist and lives her daily life as a woman dramatically reveals the personal and social turmoil women experience within the patriarchal system and culture. Among these ups and downs are concerns about family, marriage, interrupted opportunities and careers, social stereotypes about beauty, and prejudice or misunderstanding of female perspectives and creative approaches. In this special program, through 9 documentaries, the audience can meet the gaze of female creators who desire to deeply understand and reproduce the lives of female artists, going beyond consuming their turbulent life only as a dramatic element or as an attractive material or object. This section features All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, which captures the art world of photographer Nan Goldin, who vividly portrayed the American underground culture of the 80s, and her current struggle against opioid distribution. Also screened is It's Only Life After All, the story of the music and activism of the legendary American folk-rock duo Indigo Girls, who led the LGBT rights movement. The Super 8 Years, a reconstructed work of the home video footage of the Nobel Prize-winning writer Annie Ernaux's family in the 70s, and reveals an interesting contrast between the images in the video and the monologue-like narration that resembles Annie's writing. Jane Campion, the Cinema Woman, which focuses on exploring the film world of Jane Campion, who won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time as a female director with The Piano (1993), will be introduced, too.
