PARK Nam-ok's 100th Anniversary: First Women Filmmakers Revisited
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Korea's first female director Park Nam-ok, this special program looks back on the cinematic legacy of the first-generation Korean women filmmakers Park Nam-ok and Hong Eun-won, as well as the pioneering history of women's films at the time. In 1997, the first SIWFF screened The Widow as the opening film of the festival, rediscovering and highlighting Park Nam-ok as Korea's first female director. This time, The Widow (1955), the debut and only directorial work of Park Nam-ok, and A Woman Judge (1962), the debut film of Hong Eun-won, are presented. Director Hong was active during the same period as Park and is considered the second female director in Korean film history. During the screening, the cinematic world of the two directors and the changes in female narratives and images of women at the time will be focused on. In addition, Yim Soon-rye's documentary Keeping The Vision Alive (2001), which captures the history and voices of female filmmakers - including the two directors, The Dream (2001), a documentary about Park Nam-ok, and a musical documentary film which draws the life of Park Nam-ok, Après Girl (2022) are presented. The current influence of director Park Nam-ok can be inferred through these works. [Programmer HWANG Hei-rim]
