SYNOPSIS

Synopsis

A harsh and dreamy story of a young girl and her longing heart. Through Betty, living below the poverty line in suburban Colorado Springs, we experience a tight family clan of children born by children where love and dependency go hand in hand.

Program Note

Betty is a young mother of two in Colorado Springs, sharing a suburban house with ten others. The documentary introduces Betty's life, as economic and emotional anxiety often consume her. She talks about her thoughts, emotions, and situations, either calmly or nervously. The film deals with the harsh life of poverty in the US where the future seems too far to reach. However, the director doesn't add any political and social explanation sympathetically. Instead, the film shows a series of rough, sensitive images, sounds and the collision thereof. Following the unruly emotions, the camera doesn't just observe the dynamic of Betty and the people around her - it also conveys issues through excessive close-ups of the eyes staring into nothing, and lips trying to say something. The film gazes upon children in the house, especially Betty's daughter Jade. With disheveled hair, the girl runs around barefoot and plays hide-and-seek with ghosts. She opens the film with her enchanting moves in the house, and closes the film with her face excited about the change of nature. The film is a record of life that is private, fragile, uneven, and dynamic. [SON Sinae]
