SYNOPSIS

Synopsis
Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth, a compelling story about the life of writer and human rights activist
Alice WALKER. The film follows her epic journey from her birth on a plantation in the cotton fields of Georgia to her historic win of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her groundbreaking novel The Color Purple. Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth is a definitive biographical portrait that charts the legendary icon¡¯s inspiring journey to international visibility as one of the most exceptional writers¡¯ of our times.

Program Note
Being the first means overcoming or breaking the wall that no one has before; in other words, fighting against the people,
institutions, societies, politics and conventions which made the wall. Alice WALKER is the very first black woman who won the
Pulitzer Prize for her novel Color Purple containing her own experience. Written about racism and poverty, Color Purple was
adapted into a movie and musical, which caused a great sensation and gained huge success. Since then, Alice WALKER has lived
as a writer and practical human rights activist who carves the truth, ¡°the personal is the political¡± into her own writing as well as
 her life.

The director Pratibha PARMAR has criticized racist and imperialistic feminism by coining the term ¡®Imperialist Feminism¡¯
which excludes and suppresses the Third World and non-white women. In this film, the director delivers interviews with Steven
SPIELBERG, Quincy JOUNES, and Angela DAVIS in addition to Alice WALKER¡¯s own voice. Is there anything more beautiful than
courage, truth and action? [LEE Angela]
