Synopsis
Taxi driver Sang-gu is an ordinary father who has made a happy family. Due to their unfortunate financial circumstances, he is sorry that he cannot afford to send his daughter Yoon-mi to university like other parents. Yet, with a bright smile on her face, Yoon-mi tells her father that she will one day buy him a new car and pay college tuition fees for her younger sibling. However, less than two years after Yoon-mi begins her job at a large corporate company, she gets seriously ill and returns home. Sang-gu is heartbroken to see his young daughter in such a condition.
Program Note
A young woman fresh out of high school started working at a factory for Samsung semiconductor but it wasn¡¯t long before she
contracted leukemia and died. Having lost his daughter, her father became determined to prevent anyone from losing their daughter
so helplessly and began pursuing a battle against the corporation. His struggle continues to this day.
Another Family is based on the true story of HWANG Yoo-mi, her father HWANG Sang-gi, and SHARPS, an organization protecting
the health and human rights of laborers at semiconductor factories. The on-screen struggle perseveres against the substantial
capital power that dominates the world outside the film.
When director KIM Tae-yun first started writing the script, many tried to dissuade him from undertaking such a dangerous project.
Yet it soon attracted the finest in Korea¡¯s film industry, and actors stepped forward to take part. The film¡¯s production was funded
through crowd sourcing, and once released it was met with a high level of interest and praise from both critics and the general
audiences alike.
The director was deeply moved by the father¡¯s love for his daughter and his effort to ensure that her death was not in vain. In turn,
the director¡¯s sincerity led many from the country¡¯s film industry to participate voluntarily. Finally, all this brought about heated
responses from all those who watched the film. Another Family reminds us that the world could become a better place when a film
extends a caring hand towards the world. As the director, staff and audiences put this message into cinematic practice, we offer our
condolences and support to the real life victims of the film¡¯s tragedy. [LEE Angela]
