Synopsis
This is an atrocity of one woman and three men.
Program Note
An Atrocity begins with a disturbing noise. A woman is grinding something in the mortar to make food, and she walks through a long hallway into a
room. The event that occurs in the room and the confessions are uncomfortable situations for the audience to confront. Films that problematize sex
crimes frequently focus on reporting such violence to the audience by showing the victims¡¯ sufferings and wounds. However, An Atrocity makes the
audience uncomfortable by directly showing images that are often metaphorically expressed. While it is direct and explicit, the film makes use of
reflected images and the third perspective that cannot be explained in the diegesis, which suggests this film is a metaphor in itself. [HWANG Miyojo]
