For the past twenty years, a civil war has raged in northern Uganda between its government and militants, and the country¡¯s children have been the group most victimized and irreparably hurt. Children as young as five are kidnapped by the rebel forces and become child soldiers or victims of sexual abuse or become orphans after losing their parents. War/Dance follows Ugandan teens¡¯ courageous steps from lives devastated by war to positive and independent ones, set to the lively beat of African traditional music. Across the country over 20,000 schools compete in the annual National Music Competition. Students from Patongo, one of schools in the refugee camps northern Uganda begin practicing vigorously to join the competition. No one expects that the Patongo students, in their poor situation, will go home as the champions but they accept the challenge of the impossible with fierce passion, talent and courage. War/Dance is the first film produced by Shine Global, Inc. the non-profit company dedicated to raising awareness to end the abuse and exploitation of children and effecting social and political change through the production of documentary films. It won the Best Documentary Award and the Audience Award at a variety of documentary festivals and human rights festivals and the Directing Award for Documentary at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
