Traps is a feminist, black comedy about a female veterinarian who takes vengeance on the two men who raped her - using the skills of her profession. The scene where the rape victim castrates the male rapists provides a shocking, yet riveting display, in the mode of Marleen Gorris¡¯ A Question of Silence when it shows a man being murdered by three women (who are indirectly victims of patriarchy). With its prologue describing the essential differences between men and women, and the conflict and difficulties of communication based on these differences, the film preludes a ¡®war between the two sexes.¡¯ Chytilová criticizes masculinity itself and argues that there differences among male subjects are extremely limited. While masculinity is defined as internalized violence and greed, the only differences in male subjects are differences of degree: who¡¯s greedier and more violent? Raising ¡®rape¡¯ as a starting point for the analysis of morality and power relations in contemporary society, this comic/tragic film clearly shows what ensnares human beings into social, psychological traps varies from traditional gender hierarchies to the aggressive human instinct of self-preservation. Innovative and controversial, Ve¢§ra Chytilová (born 1929) is the only significant Czech woman filmmaker and Czech cinema¡¯s first feminist director. She was a prominent member of the early 1960¡¯s Czech New Wave. In her work she has explored the troubles of contemporary society and has been harshly critical of human failings. Her selected filmography includes Fruit of Paradise (1969), Prague: The Restless Heart of Europe (1984), Ban from Paradise (2001) Pleasant Moments (2006).
