SYNOPSIS

Based on the best-selling novel by Miriam Toews, the film follows a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they struggle to reconcile their faith with a series of sexual assaults committed by the colony¡¯s men.

PROGRAM NOTE

One day, the women in the village wake up with bruised and bleeding bodies. Some of them were even pregnant. The traces of violence left on their bodies are clear, but the men dismissed the women's words as vain delusions. The day when all the men in the village left for the city, the women started taking about three options. Do nothing, or stay and fight, or leave. Women Talking depicts the process of women who have been forced to remain silent all their lives, discussing and expressing their opinions for the first time and making important decisions that put their future on the line. Therefore, it makes sense to squeak. The violence and abuse they experienced cannot be summarized in plain language. Responses to trauma also differ from person to person. Nevertheless, these women continue to conflict and collide as they speak, confront their pain, and make an effort to speak up, connecting the language for a better tomorrow. Those works that go beyond murmurs, and screams become tools and weapons to understand and believe in oneself and share life's wisdom and love with others. Based on the novel of the same name written by Miriam Toews based on an actual event in the Mennonite community of Manitoba Colony in Bolivia in 2011, the film deals with group sexual assault cases using anesthetics. However, not only the perpetrators but also their harmful acts are nowhere to be found. Sarah Polley's fourth feature film features outstanding actors such as Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, and Jessie Buckley.  [Programmer SON Sinae]
