SYNOPSIS

Tomoyo Shiino is an office lady. One day, she watches the news on TV and learns that her friend Mariko Ikagawa killed herself. They graduated from the same high school and Tomoyo knows that Mariko was abused by her father for a long time. To save her soul, Tomoyo steals her remains from Mariko's family and goes on a trip.

PROGRAM NOTE

One ordinary day, Shiino, who came across the sudden news of the death of her childhood friend Mariko, embarks on a journey to the sea, intending to steal her friend¡¯s remains to save her soul from the abusive father who tormented her. How can I save my beloved Mariko, whose body and soul are shattered? Can I return to the past before Mariko left? In this strange journey with no clear answers, Shiino confronts her memories with Mariko again.
Mariko cannot escape from an exploitative romantic relationship due to the trauma of domestic violence. Shiino endures everyday verbal abuse in a black company. They share a special bond in understanding each other¡¯s deficiencies better than anyone else. The moments in My Broken Mariko, which may seem like a dramatic story at first glance, might be familiar. Like the characters in the story, moments of violence find us without reason, and a helping hand extended to someone else can also save us. In a reality where the abusers do not apologize, but the wounded ones must support and live together, how can we protect those broken Marikos who are still falling apart now?
This live-action film is based on the manga of the same title by author Hirako Waka(øÁÍ·«ï««), and it was released in Japan last autumn. [LEE Seona, Cinefemme]
