PROGRAM NOTE

Prejudice & Pride: Swedish Film Queer is a documentary about the ¡°queer frontiers¡± who bravely depicted their lives as queer individuals in Swedish film history. The director Eva Beling carefully examines the films from The Wings (1916), known to be the first Swedish queer film, to films by Greta Garbo and Ingmar Bergman, and then those of contemporary young filmmakers, explaining step by step the struggles of LGBTQ+ filmmakers against a society that imposes ¡°normalcy.¡± Although it may be misunderstood as a potentially tedious documentary about the film history of one country, the abundant energy and uniqueness of LGBTQ+ filmmakers presented, along with various archival footage, offer more than expected entertainment. The scenes from the early 1940s or earlier in which LGBTQ+ individuals discreetly reveal their preferences, and the scenes from after the 1970s that make the audacious attempts to honestly express their desire in the films provide exhilarating excitement and heartwarming inspiration. Furthermore, the bold activism of the upper generation queers, who twisted or directly denied the claims of those who believed only they were ¡°normal,¡± also instills great courage in us in 2023. This film is highly recommended not only for audiences interested in Swedish cinema and queer film history but for anyone who wants to express themselves in any possible ways. [KIM Bo-nyun]
