Egghead and Twinkie have been best friends since childhood. Egghead feels more than friendship for Twinkie, but Twinkie is discovering her identity as a lesbian. Twinkie has been online dating with BD for a long time since she got to know BD on Instagram. Twinkie goes on a journey after coming out to her parents and Egghead. Egghead joins her journey, but he struggles against his crush on her, while Twinkie explores her identity as a Chinese adopted child and a lesbian. Sarah Kambe Holland unfolds Twinkie’s identity acceptance in a light and bright way with her distinctively sparky and witty direction. Twinkie, who explores the intersectionality of identity, is lovingly portrayed in the familiar genre foundations of romantic comedy and adventure narrative. Eventually, she realizes that acceptance of identity begins with affirming herself, not with the approval and love from others. It might be a lesson that was repeated in other movies. However, it’s still refreshing to see a protagonist reach for happiness since we live in a Korean society full of homophobia. Egghead & Twinkie was created based on the director’s short film of the same title, which won the Best Film and Best Director at the Women Making A Scene International Film Project and received a feature-length production grant.  [LEE Dong-yoon]
