SYNOPSIS

Asian Premiere

SYNOPSIS
Battalion to My Beat is the story of a 13 year old tomboy living in the refugee camps of Western Sahara. Dreaming of a life beyond the confines of the camps, Mariam runs away to join the military in the middle of the desert, naively envisioning herself a Jeanne D\'Arc who will liberate her country from occupation. The story reflects the frustration that the contemporary Saharawi youth are feeling toward the complete failure of diplomacy, and their mounting determination that war is the only way to enact change.

PROGRAM NOTE

Just like her older brother and other boys, Mariam wants to go to war in a military uniform. It is obvious that she does not dream of a life within the confines of the refugee camp where she would have to take care of her younger siblings, feed goats, and watch TV shows just like other girls. She is determined to cross the vast desert to join the army. Would she be able to succeed in liberating her country, her people, and eventually herself? (SIM Hye-kyung)
