SYNOPSIS

 Synopsis
Wendy Carroll is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska, in hopes of a summer of lucrative work at the Northwestern Fish Cannery, and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions, with far-ranging repercussions for herself and her dog. Wendy and Lucy address issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people\'s duty to each other in tough times.

 Program Note
Wendy Carol is traveling across the USA to get to Alaska in her 88 Honda Accord with her mutt Lucy. She is hoping to work at a canned fish factory to earn some money. Wendy has been traveling long distance and she has a long way to go. However, her car breaks down in Oregon. Worse yet, she gets arrested when she tries to steal dog food from a supermarket and loses Lucy. As the title suggests, the main story in this film is how Wendy and Lucy reconcile. In fact, there isn¡¯t any explicit story line and most of incidents are pretty much obvious and predictable. There isn¡¯t any shocking twist at all. Still, the challenge and the originality within this film should not be overlooked. Wendy and Lucy quietly reveals those on the edge of the contemporary empire, the USA. Lucy keeps a daily record of the expenses and the balance as well as how far she has come and has to go. She sleeps curled up in her car and bathe in public bathrooms. People lining up to sell empty bottles are seldom seen on Hollywood films. America¡¯s Neo-liberalism divides the society into light and dark. Wendy and Lucy depicts those living in the dark through the itinerary of Wendy. In the society that grows in the soil of capitalism and technology, we all are assumed to own cars and cell phones and anything we do will cost money. The good deed of a security guard-he gives Wendy 6 dollarspoints out the uppermost limit of compassion and mercy nowadays. The grainy-textured screen with the hint of lyricism brings out the sense of reality and Wendy and Lucy truly reenacts the traits of early Indi-films.
