Through chance, an old homeless woman comes to own a pair of ice skates. On her first attempt to use them, the lake’s surface cracks and she falls in. Beneath the surface, she discovers a beautiful fantasy world filled with dancing fish and a dreamlike life. The imagery and animation are further emphasized by the artist’s use of color: the harmony of red on colorless backdrops proves spectacular. Woman below the Ice tells the tale of a woman’s rebirth that transcends the boundaries of life and death, past and present, and reality and fantasy. (Lim Sung-min)
