SYNOPSIS

Comprised entirely of hundreds of film samples, Hello Dankness is a political fable that bears witness to the psychotropic spectacle of American politics from 2016 to 2021. The film follows a neighborhood through these years as consensus reality disintegrates into conspiracies and other contagions.

PROGRAM NOTE

Hello Dankness was created based on putting together, or sampling images and clips extracted from films, media, and online videos from 1937 to 2022, which organizes a narrative following the actual time of the United States. The film does not attempt to approach social and political reality by revealing the context of the image. Rather, the work comically reveals today's trend, where the distinction between reality is becoming more difficult, and a political swing to the right is sweeping through the Internet community by actively borrowing and transferring the way conspiracy theories are created through composite images and dissemination and the way information is spread with interpretive symbols called memes. This film mixes vast images that exist everywhere in reality, both online and offline, along with the culture and emotions engraved on films while using the Hollywood film technique, the ¡°shot-reverse shot¡± structure, and the rotoscoping technique that cuts and synthesizes parts of images. Reality is depicted as exaggerated humor, and the movie tests whether it can decrypt all of this. The combination of American political events weaved in a narrative and "ridiculously" bonded images create an overshadowed sense of reality that goes over between ¡°archival traces remaining in the imagination in cinema¡± and ¡°absurd and mighty images existing in reality.¡± [LEE Sang-hee]
