Countess Irma finds Empress Sisi in Greece, away from the etiquette of the court. They live in freedom, but no matter how much Irma and Sisi resist, in the end, they are left with only one destructive path that will bind them together forever.
Elisabeth, called Sisi, was an empress of Austria known for keeping her beauty till the moment she got murdered. Her life received attention from people even after death as a main character of the period, including the movie Corsage (2022). Sisi & I is a biographical drama depicting the secretive life of Elisabeth and Irma, who served Elisabeth till her death. The film takes Irma¡¯s point of view, starting from the day she was sent to Elisabeth. Sandra Hüller acts as Countess Irma Sztáray, a bright and energetic attendant, who served until the last moment the queen died, and the film mainly focuses on her. Freed from her mother, whose strictness was almost manipulative, Irma arrives at an idyllic summerhouse in Corfu, where she finds Elisabeth starving due to her obsession with her weight and then binge eating at night while sometimes they have a good time under the sun as if there¡¯s nothing they need to worry about. Sometimes peaceful, sometimes at stake, the life of Elisabeth keeps on while Irma has to stay around her. Adding a pop soundtrack to the historical drama, which is not unusual nowadays, adds a cheerful vibe to the movie. Sisi & I was screened at 2023 Berlinale Panorama section. [LEE Dahye]
