PROGRAM NOTE

A debut feature film by the director Ramata-Toulaye Sy. The cinematography depicting the nature of the Republic of Senegal is breathtaking. Banel and Adama, who live in a remote northern village in Senegal, are a young couple who avidly love each other. Only the two exist in their world. They fell in love early in their teenage years and are now married, but the situation is not so simple. Banel had to marry Adama's older brother, who was the tribal chief. She could only marry Adama after his death. It was assumed to be honorable and supported by the elders of the tribe. But the elders now ask Adama to become a tribal chief. Adama refuses their request, and Banel's refusal to conceive is also controversial. A prolonged drought in the village inflicted complaints toward Banel. The film displays the community that inherits tradition, the female position in that communal space, and the environmental factors they encounter due to climate change within the vast beauty of the African wilderness. The story gets to the peak of the explosion when the lovebirds go through conflicts within the communal system, and the non-negotiable request from the elderly tries to separate the holding hands of the two, overturning the beauty of the scenery that the film accumulated with time. The official selection for Competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. [LEE Dahye]
