Jiwon, a 19-year-old 4th generation Koryo-saram (Korean-Uzbekistan), has been falling apart since Hani, Jiwon's only Korean-born friend, started to prepare for the college entry exam. She decides to join Hani in her mischief with Hani¡¯s new friend Sunwoo, to save their friendship.
Jiwon, an overseas Korean of Koryo-saram origin, has another name: Yulia. She lives in the residence of the Koryo-saram and hangs out with Korean friends. Hani calls her Jiwon and tries to erase the indicators of discrimination. Still, Sunwoo, whom she met for the first time, calls her Yulia, highlighting her sense of alienation as a foreigner. When her friends go to private academies to prepare for the college entrance exam, she has to take a part-time job introduced by the employment agency. Rather than revealing the mechanism of realistic discrimination felt by overseas Koreans, the film chooses to emotionally imply the confusion and establishment of identity through the strange sexual tension between high school girls of the same age. Physical imprints such as tattoos, acupressure marks, and ear piercings remind us of the coming-of-age ceremony accompanied by anxiety and pain. [SONG Hyojoung]
