SYNOPSIS

With the birth of the first female master of ¡°Ssireum,¡± traditional Korean wrestling, in 2009, women wrestlers expect official competitions and business teams to emerge. Ten years later, five wrestlers who survived overcoming challenges in unpopular sports struggle to become a Ssireum champion.

PROGRAM NOTE

It's been ten years since the Korean Ssireum Association allowed female athletes to register in 1999. In 2009, Lim Soojeong became the first woman to win the championship and set a record that will be remembered as a "legend that will last forever." As the new sandstorm blows to the ssireum scene, which was considered as men only, other female players emerge, and a business team is created. Sandstorm follows the paths of Choi Heehwa, Kim Dahye, Yang Yoonseo, Song Songhwa, and Lim Soojeong, who trained together at the women's ssireum team, Kolping, in 2017. What changes have they been going through from the days when they were working together in a team known for the best skills and unity to 2021, when they faced COVID-19? The film brings the five players to the center of the screen, one by one, to listen to their stories. The central figure changes from chapter to chapter, but their words confessing the glory and crisis of the athlete's life fill in gaps and overlap, creating a steady flow. Even when they switch teams or feel isolated during an injury or slump, their teammates are still theirs. The five players learn affection and respect as they compete body to body. While the film conveys the athletes' determination and passion for their dream, it also explores how they are often exposed to gazes that problematize their age and gender. As the camera captures the athlete's face saying, "My story will go on," like she shouts out to the world that puts a limit, this documentary doesn't stop cheering until the end. [CHA Hanbi]
