SYNOPSIS

Set in 1999, the era of apocalypse when violence was rampant, the film tells the story of the intense love and friendship of girls when nothing was easy.

PROGRAM NOTE

For high school taekwondo player Jooyoung, the summer is bittersweet and glorious. Everything that happens in her ¡°Jeongsang (normal)¡± high school taekwondo team is so abnormal that she wishes the world would end as rumored. However, after she falls in love with Yeji, she can¡¯t stop dreaming of eternity. For her, the world splits in two: one is stained with violence and corruption, the other with excitement and fondness. The film focuses on high school girls who experience both worlds simultaneously, colorfully recreating the era with props like pagers, payphones, and old K-pop. They witness the injustice of a system that creates hierarchies and justifies violence based on age, gender, and position. So they decide to fight against all of these, fueled by love and friendship. The film sheds light on marginalized youth and tells about episode redolent of the #MeToo movement in athletics while questioning the role of adults. But there are not just mean and stupid adults around the protagonists but also others who can see their limitations, agonize, and accept others¡¯ feelings as they are. Thanks to them, the girls are encouraged to pursue their desired paths instead of being overwhelmed by the rigid gaze that discriminates between the normal and the abnormal. Because the path helps them to choose present love rather than future heaven, the film pulls out some shining moments in the end. [CHA Hanbi]
