A powerful examination of the experiences of people who are living with HIV in Ireland today, How to Tell A Secret is a hybrid documentary film that looks at social stigma and the art of telling your story.
In 2017, Shaun Dunne presented the play Rapids, a theatrical production based on interviews with HIV/AIDS-infected individuals living in Ireland. Five years later, Shaun Dunne and co-director Anna Rogers revisit past interviewees and record their stories directly on the camera. The documentary intertwines the stories of those who could not reveal their faces and names in the previous play with the actors who portrayed them theatrically, resignifying the interviewees¡¯ stories. The collision of past and present and reality and fiction provides an opportunity to realize how Irish society placed a taboo on HIV/AIDS and discriminated against the infected individuals. The documentary also highlights the transformation that occurred over six years, allowing infected individuals to share their stories firsthand, thanks to the efforts of activists who aimed to bring their stories to light. There is no method to talk about a secret for those who cannot tell a secret. The film questions whether society is genuinely prepared to listen to those who cannot share their secrets. It arouses curiosity about how the stories of infected individuals can be conveyed in the context of South Korean society beyond Ireland¡¯s situation. [LEE Dong-yoon]
