SYNOPSIS

The introverted Foley artist, Eva, struggles to create sounds for a commercial featuring a horse. Empowered by a horsetail growing out of her body, she lures a botanist into an affair through a game of submission. Piaffe is a visceral journey into control, gender, and artifice.

PROGRAM NOTE

At times unnoticed, visuals and sounds often merge into a single entity, even if they follow distinct production processes. Observing the work of a foley artist reveals a subtle yet clear mismatch. Eva, who struggles to create a sound for an advertisement, utilizes various materials to find the right sound for the rhythm of the horse's footsteps. This process goes beyond mere sound searching; it exposes Eva's journey into the unknown. As Eva delves into the movement of horses, her inner animalistic nature awakens. This transformation can be explained through categories like instinct, sexual energy, and desire, but more fundamentally, animality addresses the overflowing ambiguity that cannot be locked in rigid boundaries. A botanist who studies ferns through photo slides discusses the plants' hermaphrodite characteristics. Everywhere, exuberant vitality exists that defies the confines of mundane human categories. A dance sequence in intense techno music showcases the peak of this energy. Piaffe is Ann Oren's ambitious debut film not only explores motifs of physical transformation but also freely explores the history of the film media. [Programmer SON Sinae]
