SYNOPSIS

In the early 1970s, Heiny Srour and her crew trekked 800 km on foot to make the film about women fighting for independence against the colonial oppression of the Omani regime. Srour deploys archive footage, photographs, location footage and music in a powerful statement against oppression and for self-determination. 

PROGRAM NOTE

In the mid-1960s, at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, the Dhofar Liberation Front began an armed struggle for independence against imperialistic invasions of oil-producing regions. The Liberation Front established a social, cultural, economic, and military structure centered around anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist liberation ideologies. One novel inspired by this struggle is Albert Cossery¡¯s Une ambition dans le désert (An Ambition in the Desert) (1984), the original story of Jean-Luc Godard¡¯s The Image Book Part 5: The Central Region (2018). The Liberation Front particularly emphasized women¡¯s liberation, considering it the key to victory and placing women at the forefront of the struggle. Yet, this remarkable history remained largely unrecorded. Lebanese filmmaker Heiny Srour, during her anthropology Ph.D., encountered the feminist vision of the Dhofar Liberation Front and resolved to document it. In the 1970s, Srour and her production team traveled 800 km across deserts and mountains to escape bombings. Thus, their cameras capture footage of the Dhofar Liberation Front. The film showcases the community, depicting various aspects, from military training to caring for one another. [Programmer SON Sinae]

    A Lebanese film director born in Beirut in 1945. Srour studied sociology at the American University in Beirut and then completed a doctorate in social anthropology at the Sorbonne. She is best known for being the first female Arab filmmaker to have a film, Saat El Tahrir Dakkat or The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived, chosen for the Cannes Film Festival. Srour advocated for women's rights through her films, her writing, and by funding other filmmakers.
