SYNOPSIS

A-hyeon, a straight Christian woman in South Korea, builds a friendship with Gang-won, a gay man. While overcoming differences and conflicts between people with contrasting lifestyles, the film asks, “What is it to understand others? How can we understand differences and coexist?”

PROGRAM NOTE

Queer My Friends is a documentary about Seo Ahhyun, who has lived as a cisgender Christian for her whole life but struggles to change when her best friend, Song Gang-won, comes out as gay. Although Ahhyun can’t get a job or be separated from her parents after college, making a film is more urgent for her. Ahhyun wants to film her dear friend, who came out five years after leaving for the United States with dreams of becoming a musical actor. This makes Ahhyun encounter the perspective that breaks down her world for the first time. To her surprise, Ahhyun gets to know Gang-won as he truly is. This moves her from out of the limitations that a non-queer creator has with viewing queer culture. This documentary observes Gang-won’s life for a few years, slowly and in-depth, and is a positive step toward a queer-friendly society. It offers to share ponderings about how to see people living in a different world, how to live with them, how to share friendship with them, and how to encourage each other. [YEOM Eunyoung]
