Jane Schoenbrun's We're All Going to the World's Fair begins with a variation of the urban legend of ¡°Bloody Mary,¡± familiar to horror fans of the film Candy Man (1992). Going online and saying ¡°We're all going to the World's Fair¡± four times in front of a camera, then applying one¡¯s own blood to the monitor will make something happen. Casey, a lonely girl who does not leave the attic, participates in the game and records changes that may or may not occur to her. A middle-aged man who has been watching Casey's channel contacts her.
With this much setting, the film may be regarded as the kind of found-footage horror that is so common these days. This may not be entirely wrong, as about 80% of the film is made of online videos and is often not without creepy scenes. However, more important than the genre-based stimulus in this film is the elaborate and plaintive portrayal of the isolation, anxiety, and confusion a lonely teenager experiences. [Djuna]
