This is the story of two women, or maybe three. Sara was born in Argentina and raised by her nanny Yarisa. Her wealthy family has recently moved to the Dominican Republic, Yarisa¡¯s home country, and Yarisa¡¯s daughter Mallory, the same age as Sarah, is there too. Carajita is a unique psychological thriller set in the Caribbean and is an ominous melodrama between three women. Yet the main focus is on Sarah and Yarisa, who are connected by a strong bond despite persistent class and racial distances between them. Mallory knows that her mother¡¯s attention and love are more for Sarah than for herself. The film creates a distinct atmosphere through images of greenery and the sea, substance abuse, and languid, fractured sunlight, feeling as if the world is naturally full of anxiety and danger. But then the world begins to shake out of control with someone¡¯s death. Here, the psychology of the characters is far more important than the circumstances, and the gaps between the characters becomes more overt and influences their behavior dramatically. While the traditional ritual for the dead takes place, loss and guilt are engraved on those who fail to mourn. [SON Sinae]
