Synopsis
Eunmi works hard to prepare for the civil service examination, relieving her stress by casually going out with various men. She meets a guy at her private academy and feels drawn to him, yet there are strange rumors around him.
Program Note
Noryangjin is a part of Seoul filled with weary people preparing for jobs or national exams. So far, many films have used the bleak area as subject matter. Characters in Eunmi are job seekers. However, the film focuses on a women's private, secret desire rather than conflicts and events caused by the place. Eunmi (SON Yewon), preparing for a civil service exam, enjoys having sex with men whom she meets at a library, study groups, and on the road. Whether she studies in the library or at home, or makes love at a love hotel, there is no change in her face. She seems to expect nothing from people in front of her at that very moment. Her blank face looks so rigid like a solid wall. Eunmi sleeps with Byungtae (KWAK Minkyu), a member of her study group. Some time later, he disappears. This happens after Eunmi and Byungtae had a fierce fight on a pedestrian overpass. His disappearance will not make any change on her face and her repetitive life. We can't fully understand her feelings and conditions. Through her indifferent posture and subtle movements, we get a glimpse of her anxious state, standing on the border of self-torture and abuse, sexual desire and death drive, reality and fantasy. She seems to accept the state of no way out for the time being but refuses to open her heart to anyone. Actress SON gives a great performance in expressing the difficult character and making it persuasive. [JEONG Jihye]
