SYNOPSIS

Wild Nights with Emily is a queer and subversive reinterpretation of the life and works of Emily DICKINSON, known as a poet and who remained single. Although DICKINSON wrote about 1,800 poems, only 11 pieces were released during her lifetime. Even they were often significantly edited by sexist male editors. Her poetry was rediscovered after her death, adding new feminist literature to be evaluated by experts and poetry enthusiasts.
Madeleine OLNEK¡¯s biographical film is based on a recent study of Emily DICKSON¡¯s lifelong relationship with a woman; Susan GILBERT, DICKINSON¡¯s long-time friend and wife of her older brother, Austin. Their romantic relationship was erased by an editor, Mabel, after her death. The final scene is split between Susan at the bedside of a dying Emily and the editor deleting Susan¡¯s names in Emily¡¯s letters. This sound of erasure lasts until the credits roll, symbolizing how a great woman¡¯s passion, her authentic voice and queer relationship have been erased from history. [HONG Soin]
