Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is a documentary about the musical performances, as well as personal and public life of pop culture icon Grace JONES. Born in 1948 in Jamaica, Grace JONES was brought up by her strict clergyman father, but started her modeling career thanks to her epicene charms and unique face and ventured into acting and music. As a musician who pioneered a distinct musician style and captivated the audience with her bold and abstruse stage costumes, and aura, she seemed like a free spirit. However, she often showed a cold, businesslike attitude with people in her field, which made her difficult to figure out. The film sheds light on her hard-to-capture, complex personality by crossing between the artist Grace JONES in the U.S. and the Grace JONES at her home in Jamaica.
There are artisans who purposefully embody the gender-neutral image such as David BOWIE or Prince, and Grace JONES is one of them. It¡¯s fascinating that her costume style seems to overlap with Lady Gaga. While the film doesn¡¯t indicate explicitly, director Sophie FIENNES shot footages of Grace JONES for 5 years in the early 2000s. There are many interesting behind stories, such as that Grace JONES was in her 50s then, a surprise appearance of a picture of Andy WARHOL known to be her lover once. [LEE Ji-Heng]
