SYNOPSIS

To marry by match-making or to live alone, that is the question. This film portrays a set of Chinese women who chose to live alone in their 20s. Instead of serving their husbands and nurturing their children, they worked at a cotton mill and lived at nursing house after they retired. They tell their own stories without regrets, yet lonely somehow.

Early twentieth century in Southern China, women who just became 20 years old had two choices. An arranged marriage or remain unmarried. Despite the traditional patriarchal social system in China, more than thousands of women made the brave choice to remain single for rest of their lives. They worked in a factory instead of being married to look after husbands and children. They also took their decisions very seriously and instead of a marriage ceremony, they had a single woman ceremony to mark their pride. They were new women of working class in modern China. Now ninety-something years old, all retired and living in nursing homes, they are still proud of their choice to earn their freedom and independent life over the traditional marriage. This documentary is a portrait of women who has no regrets in their lives at the end of their lives and shows how they lived their wonderful lives. (CHO Hye-young)
