SYNOPSIS
Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine, who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian starts dating her best friend Krista. All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.
PROGRAM NOTE
The Edge of Seventeen is the directorial debut feature of Kelly Fremon Craig in which deals with late teens’ emotional waves oscillating between self-hatred and self-pity. She worked as a writer for films such as Streak(2008), a coming-of-age short film directed by Demi Moore, and Post Grad(2009), a film about a young woman forced to live with her parents due to the financial crisis. As the writer of these films, she represented the coming of age process as relatively redefined one according to respective subjects and their subjectivities. Her directorial debut feature also resides in the boundary of her interests, and the message which this film wants to deliver is, in fact, rather expressed in a few lines at the later part of the film. Instead, she hardly wants us to be put into the psychology of the leading female character’s point of view and her pains in a unilateral way. There are many points of views provided for audiences: anxious female protagonist, her nervous mother as restless as her daughter, her exhausted brother who is never appreciated properly, her history teacher who takes life as sarcastic and dull as she does, but always maintains sort of detachment from everything, etc. This film opens up any possible entrances for audiences to choose to follow.

Kelly FREMON CRAIGwas born in Whittier, California and graduated from UC Irvine with an English degree.She started out writing sketch comedy and spoken word poetry in college, then landed an internship in the film division of Immortal Entertainment, where she read her first film script and began to pursue screenwriting. CRAIG has cited writer-director John HUGHES as an influence on writing The Edge of Seventeen,and has mentioned Christopher GUEST, Alexander PAYNE, Nick HORNBY, and David SEDARIS as inspirations.
