SYNOPSIS

SYNOPSIS
A middle-aged contract killer must reconcile her life between her ruthless clients and her young, unquestioning son who wants to be just like her.

PROGRAM NOTE

It is a short film directed by Toy REI who is a promising director, actor, and screenwriter. She stars in her own film as a mid-aged contract killer who has to bring up her precious son in a violent and ruthless world. The film follows this mother-killer character in a monotone first-person narration to reveal her inner conflict coming from the fact that she must give unconditional love to her son while brutally killing others if necessary. Boxer is a film that boldly breaks the deeply rooted codes and conventions of family and action films by presenting a contradictory mother-killer character and creating harmony in contradiction between motherhood and violence. Toy LEI has had a fascination with action films ever since her parents took her to Chinatown as a kid to watch kung-fu movies every Saturday afternoon. After lamenting the lack of roles for Asian females over 30, she began writing, directing, and producing her own projects. Her directorial debut, The Wedding, won her the Top 5 Women Filmmakers award from the Asian-American Film Lab and New York Women in Film and Television. Her latest, BOXER, won Best Actress, Best Action and the Grand Prize at the 2015 Asian-American Film Lab 72-hr Shootout. Toy, one of the handfuls of female fight choreographers out there, is currently under a career mentorship with Grace MOSS at NBC/Universal and a stunt/action filmmaking mentorship with Lane LEAVITT.
