Aging Documentay
SYNOPSIS
One summer day, I was searching for a job and I heard the shocking news. My grandmother tried to commit suicide by taking pills. I decided to stay with her, so she can\'t leave me. My grandma wakes up early in the morning she waters the flowers, cleans her garden and makes us nice breakfast. She saved the bird from drowning in the toilet and she told me to let it fly with big smile. But why did she try to kill herself? By staying with her, I started to understand her little by little.
PROGRAM NOTE
Summer of 2013, in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do province.
The granddaughter, who is the director of this film, visits
her grandma\'s house because she heard the news
that her grandma tried to commit suicide. Her grandma
loves her dearly and had raised her. After spending a
few days with her grandma, the granddaughter says
goodbye to her grandma once again. In February
of the following year, the granddaughter hears from
her mother that her oldest uncle on her mother\'s side
accidentally fell and died. The granddaughter quickly
visits her uncle\'s grave, and the remaining living
children, including the mom and grandchildren, are
now thinking of sending the grandmother to a nursing
home, but the grandmother wishes to live the rest of
her life at home. Eventually, the grandma ends up
staying at home, and the granddaughter always gives
her grandma nutritional supplements every time she
visits her, without her mom knowing. The grandma,
who is 94 years of age, and the granddaughter go on a
walk together on a sunny, beautiful day. The grandma
says, \"Disgustingly good. Really¡¦\"
Dear Grandma is the granddaughter\'s video diary of
her grandmother during her living years. The intimate,
dear feelings she has for her grandma who raised
her did not change even when the granddaughter
grew up, but instead of the diary that she wrote during
elementary school, the granddaughter now has a
video camera in her hand. This is because the video
is the best memory device to record and document
the diary that she wrote, the pictures she took with her
grandma, and all of the videos of her grandmother
before she passed away. This video diary created by
the granddaughter so that she could watch it after her
grandmother passes away, takes death and portrays
it just as it is – something that any human must face
one day – and transcends the first-person perspective,
which could be confining and trite by achieving
universality. [Sunah KIM]
