SYNOPSIS

NAWFF Award 2016

Heibei Taipei sophisticatedly weaves together the personal and the public histories as the director Li Nien-Hsiu embarked on a journey back to his father¡¯s long-lost hometown in Heibei, China, on behalf of her father as well as for her own comprehension of the turbulent history that deeply affects her father and her family. The film succeeds in layering in nuance as the investigation of her father¡¯s historical trauma and shifted proclivity for cross-dressing is handled with honesty, understanding, self-reflexivity, and an ironic sense of humor. The metaphorical and subjective images of the poetic reenactment not only multiply the film¡¯s points of view, but also experiment with the boundary between reality and representation in documentaries.  NAWFF Award 2016
