 This film would not be so much unfamiliar to anyone who had fun in watching Whip It (dir. Drew BARRYMORE, 2009) starring Ellen PAGE. Derby Crazy Love is an adrenaline-filled exploration into a history of female roller derby and queer subculture, which is presented around a female roller derby team, \"New Skids on the Block\" in Montreal, Canada. Female roller derby, which became popular in Canada, U.K., U.S.A., and etc., probably the most violent contact sport played by female players. The game consists of a scoring player(\"jammer\") from each team, and the other four members of \"blockers\". This is one of the most intense women\'s sports since the players score points by crashing into or dodging their opponents without using any additional gears. In the midst of film, this film widens its focus from a Canadian roller derby team \"New Skids on the Block\" to 13 representative teams coming from all over the world to participate in the 2001 Roller Derby World Cup in Montreal, and invites us to the exploration of roller culture. These representative roller derby players are all strongminded, independent, confident, and committed of course it is needless to say that they are all physically strong. Back in the old days, roller skating was often combined with the wrestling, and there was not whatsoever culture at all. It was only after the 1980s that this roller skating was cross-bred with disco culture. Roller skating, now, has been transformed into a new queer punk rock sport culture with a touch of physically and spiritually perfect female players. [Sunah KIM]
