Synopsis
Marilyn Monroe is one of the most iconic symbols of glamour and raw female sexuality the movies have ever produced. Her story has been told thousands of times through books, articles and films – yet never as revealingly as in Liz GARBUS’s documentary, which draws on hundreds of never-before-seen personal papers, diaries and letters, as well as newly released home movies, photos and outtakes.

Marilyn MONROE is the greatest Hollywood actress of the 20th century and a world-renowned sex symbol. Aside from her dizzying femininity, she has been remembered for her three failed marriages, drug addiction, and tragic private life that led to her suspicious death. Fifty years after her death, her private possessions, including her diaries, letters, and drawings, have been publicly released for the first time.
Liz GARBUS’s feminist reinterpretation of Marilyn MONROE, Love, Marilyn, transforms the existing perspective about MONROE. The documentary reinterprets the title figure as an autonomous woman who established her territory in the film industry through her insight and strategic adjustment of her image.
The images of MONROE in old classic films and her personal photographs, until now stored in an old drawer, are enough to immerse the audience in memories. Further, contemporary actresses, including Elizabeth BANKS, Glenn CLOSE, Lindsay LOHAN, and Uma THURMAN, reproduce MONROE’s internal voice in the film.
