Elise SIMARD
Synopsis
To find light, we must first journey through the darkness. A sombre and beautiful autobiographical story that follows a young girl¡¯s bus ride home in winter. Drifting between real and imagined events in her past and present, the girl travels towards some semblance, however complex and uncertain, of self-discovery and rebirth. Using a mix of time-lapse photography with ink and pastels, Simard creates a haunting, compassionate exploration of the pain and fragility of addiction and existence.
Program Note
On her way back home, a girl comes across the landscape within herself through the blurred view of a twilight evening. The grass wavering along with the wind outside the windows calmly shakes her emotions, and the vibration gradually moves deep into her inner self. The film is edited in a way that freely links light with darkness and real with abstract images, lyrically portraying the girl¡¯s consciousness going back and forth between reality and imagination. My little underground is a poetic animation that captures a rare moment when the senses of life come to life amidst repetitive routines. [LEE Hyo-jeong]
