Synopsis
When she was sixteen, Camille met Eric and fell madly in love with him. They had a daughter together, and the three of them led a happy life. Then, 25 years later, Eric leaves Camille, saying that he is in love with another woman. It breaks Camille¡¯s heart, and she lives every day in sorrow. Then something magical happens to Camille. On New Year¡¯s Eve, she finds herself back in time, as a 16-year-old once again. Once more, she faces her parents, friends, childhood memories, and Eric... Knowing how it ends, will Camille fall in love with Eric again?
Program Note
Since the theme ¡®time travel¡¯ accompanies the impossible wish ¡°What if we could go back...¡±, it hints at the bitter premonition, despite its interesting plots, that we will inevitably be defeated in the battle against the laws of nature and destiny. In Camille Rewinds , which was screened in the Directors¡¯ Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the heroine Camille, played by Noémie LVOVSKY–actress, writer and director of the film–travels to her own past by jumping 25 years back from her troubling middle-aged present. Baffled, she walks toward her mother¡¯s unexpected death and the encounter with her future husband who will eventually leave her in 25 years.
The film focuses less on her active adventure to prevent the tragedy approaching her and more on how she recovers energy to go on with her life through the support from her family and friends. Through this process, she finally realizes that she needs ¡°courage to change what she can and wisdom to accept what she cannot change¡±. The time travel eventually ends and her bitter life goes on, but now she has the cassette tape containing her mother¡¯s voice and her friends who still stay by her side. And she also has her smile, showing that she has learned how to stay positive despite the unwinnable battle against destiny. [LEE Jee-heng]
