SynopsisBorn as female and feeling in the male gender, that is the path taken by those known as \'transboys\' who cross the boundary between genders. Lynnee, Kaleb, Miguel and Rocco embody and explore the fluidity of gender. This trip requires them to invent new marks. It questions the boundary between masculine and feminine, and gender relations in society.
Program Note
Girl or Boy, My Sex Is Not My Gender traces the journeys of four characters who are born women but go in search of their masculinity beyond the gender division between male and female. In San Francisco, New York, Paris and Barcelona, transgendered characters Lynn, Kaleb, Miguel and Rocco cross the boundary between the genders and embody the fluidity of gender. By visualizing the relationships these four characters develop with their families, lovers and with their own bodies, the director suggests we consider the issue of gender in a new light.
Does becoming a man negate the self that has grown up as a woman? How does one make use of the male status that can be oppressive to one¡¯s former gender? Why are most people unnerved by the occupation of the space between genders? Not only do the questions the four characters put forward pose challenges about gender norms, but they are also closely linked to various issues, including the problem of power and hierarchy surrounding gender, hetero- and homo-sexual relationships, and social anxiety regarding undetermined existence. This film is significant in that it reaches beyond the simplistic dichotomy of male and female to open up the possibilities of acquiring countless other permutations of gender and sexuality.
