Emmanuelle MILLET
Synopsis
Sarah 20, lives in a hostel and does one odd job after the other. When she actively starts to live an adult life, she discovers she is seven-month pregnant, a denial of pregnancy. Shocked she is torn apart between the fact she needs to assimilate her sudden condition as a future mother and her strong will to become a working woman¡¦.
Program Note
Twiggy, which is director Emmanuelle MILLET¡¯s first feature-length film, rhythmically shows the experience of a woman trying to stand on her own in a society through the eye of a twenty-year-old named Sarah who has just taken her first step into the workforce. Sarah, who was working as an art gallery intern was shoved out by her competitions. Laid-off from her job and kicked out from the inn that she was staying at, she finds out to her surprise that she is six months pregnant. Everything happens all at once and she is thrown into a state of confusion. In between her determination to obtain a solid employment and her unwanted pregnancy, she chooses what is the best for herself. In a society that takes a woman¡¯s maternal instinct for granted, Sarah¡¯s choice may not be understood. Even the unwed mothers in a local family clinic frown upon Sarah who does not seem to show a sense of responsibility for her unborn child. However, the director who had been maintaining distance from Sarah expresses that maternal instinct is of choice by focusing on Sarah¡¯s pain in the latter half of the film. (YI Sooyeon)
