GUO Xiaolu
SynopsisSimple woman KWOK Yun leads a peasant¡¯s life in the peaceful mountains around remote Three-Headed Bird Village. She has no dreams of a different life, no great plans for the future. One day, KWOK Yun sees a UFO – a giant glowing thing in the shape of a dumpling! The ambitious village leader Chief Chang uses KWOK Yun¡¯s unexpected events for political gain.
Program Note
UFO in Her Eyes is a new film by GUO Xiaolu, an active film director and a novelist in both Europe and Asia. It satirically presents the realities of a rural Chinese village swept in the winds of globalization and development. In a quiet village in the mountains, KWOK Yun, who has been leading a simple and honest life, witnesses a huge UFO. Village Leader Chang makes a political use of this event and attempts to establish a tourist industry at the village. As a huge hotel for a large scale exposition is built on the farm lands, and an American celebrity is invited to promote the expo, the village is caught in a rapid whirlwind of changes.
The film, based on the novel of the same title written by the director herself, UFO in Her Eyes is a combination of Sci-Fi and fantasy. From the narrative aspect, it is a bold experiment exceeding the existing conventions. This films gives us a keen insight into the way women are exploited, through the lives of two women - KWOK Yun, who stands under the spotlight as an example of Chinese women, and Village leader Chang, who tries to revitalize the village through tourist industry. The allegoric expressions and the fantasy style of the film re-reflect the ridiculousness and ironic side of the events that take place in reality. (HONG So-in)
