Synopsis
Shooting during the last days of Astroland at Coney Island, New York, the filmmakers find that the inevitable fact of ageing echoes in the architecture of the amusement park and in the emulsion of the film medium itself.
Program Note
Generations explores the materiality of film and the meaning of filming a movie in today’s world of digital films. A 70-yearold lesbian legendary experimental filmmaker Barbara HAMMER suggests to an up-and-coming queer film director Gina CARDUCCI to collaborate on a film. The two directors edit the same footage and sound in their own style—Gina CARDUCCI uses film, while as Barbara HAMMER works with digital technology. Then the two films are joined together. Generations allows the audience to think about the digital medium and the temporality of film, and overlaps different media with the meaning of the two different generations’ collaboration. Barbara HAMMER is an internationally recognized film artist who has made 80 films/videos making a significant contribution to lesbian and gay cinema. Her experimental films of the 1970’s often dealt with taboo subjects such as menstruation, female orgasm, and lesbian sexuality. In the 80’s, she used optical printing to explore perception and the fragility of 16mm film life itself. Her documentaries tell the stories of marginalized people who have been hidden from history and are often essay films which are multileveled and engaging audiences with the goal of activating them to make social change.

Gina CARDUCCI completed three short films; Brighter Days (2005), Tell Me Something I Don\'t Know (2004) and Stone Welcome Mat (2003).
