Synopsis
Difficult Love is an intimate, thought-provoking portrait of internationally celebrated South African lesbian photographer, Zanele MUHOLI, and her highly personal take on the challenges facing black lesbians in South Africa today.
Program Note
Difficult Love shows the world of art and life of Zanele MUHOLI, a world renowned photographer who stood in the center of controversy by visualizing black lesbian women¡¯s body. Zanele MUHOLI is the director and the main character of this film. She contextualizes the situation of the queers in Africa through her photography exhibitions in South Africa, which have increased the visibility of the queers, and the aversive response to her exhibition within South Africa. Difficult Love not only allows us a look into the passion of an intriguing and powerful artist who has been visualizing lesbian women¡¯s body and desire, but also highlights the present of a queer community fighting powerfully in a society where the discourse on homosexuality has barely developed.
