Synopsis
  The Lady is a story about Aung San Suu Kyi and Michael ARIS as well as an epic poem about a peaceful struggle of a woman who stood in the center of the Burmese democratic movement. Their love is not been weakened but instead be strengthened while they were away from each other for a long period of time and while fighting the government that threatened her life.

 Program Note
 This is a biographical film about Aung San Suu Kyi, the symbol of Burma’s democratization and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Rebecca FRAYNE, a screen writer and a documentary director, visits Burma in the early 1990s and begins to write a script. The script was developed after numerous interviews with Aung San Suu Kyi. The film—directed by Luc BESSON, and the role of Aung San Suu Kyi played by Michelle YEOH—calmly follows the well-known political life of Aung San Suu Kyi. Although the pacing and the colors Luc BESSON is known for are not quite present in the film, Michelle YEOH masterfully depicts the dignified and elegantly determined female political leader. Michael, Aung San Suu Kyi’s husband, plays as much an important role as she is. The depiction of Michael is intriguing from the gender power dynamic. He plays the role of a supportive and “wifely” husband. When his wife is hesitant about taking the position as the general secretary of the NLD party, Michael takes on his role as a wise wife and says, “Answer your country’s call.” In the end, he meets an early death, as he neglected his own health and spent his life raising their children on his own and informing the world about his wife’s political activities. This film calls attention to the problems of figure and appearance demanded of a female political leader by the public. (HWANG Miyojo)
