Julie DELPY
Synopsis
In 1979, Albertine, 10-year-old girl, and all her relatives have gathered in the family house in Brittany for their grandmother¡¯s birthday. All believe a piece of the Skylab will fall on their heads that summer. This reunion turns out to be a crazy weekend of revelations, love and singing¡¦.
Program Note
Julie DELPY¡¯s fourth film Le Skylab won the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Arbertine travels to Brittany, the vacation spot in southern France, to celebrate her grandmother¡¯s birthday. The extended family of her makes such an uproarious gathering. Kids express their curiosity and excitement about sex and adults are in political confrontation. Among the talks, there is an issue of the NASA¡¯s space station Skylab which is conjectured to drop on southern France. Meanwhile, a covert happening takes place in the middle of the night, but in the morning, no one talks about it. Everyone finishes their travel with enjoyable breakfast. The space station Skylab eventually falls on Australia, not on southern France. While one axis of the Le Skylab is reconciliation and festival, another axis of the film is death and image of fall. To Albertine, who believes that the fall of the Skylab is the end of the world, the very first thing she sees is a dead pig hung on the wall when she arrives at the grandmother¡¯s house. Many parts of the film arouse traumatized images of the Vietnam War and of the battle of Algiers. The film combines a large family¡¯s uproarious vacation with critical but nostalgic retrospection of 1970s French society which was politically intense. (HWANG Miyojo)
