Michel OCELOT
Synopsis
Michel OCELOT, the master animator, is well-known in Korea for his Kirikou and the Sorceress and Princes and Princesses . His new work, Tales of the Night , consists of six fairy-tale-like stories of silhouette animation in one package film.
Program Note
Tales of the Night was released in 2011 by a director of animated film, Michel OCELOT, known for Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998), Princes and Princesses (1999) and Azur & Asmar: The Princes\' Quest (2006). Tales of the Night is a full-length film which added one original episode to five episodes out of 10-hour animation series, Dragon and Princesses, aired on French TV channel Canal+ in 2010. The work is like a small anthology of folktales and legends that have passed down in Aztec, Caribbean coast, medieval France, Tibet and etc. With Michel OCELOT¡¯s
unique style of cut out animation, these stories develop in shadow play. It is worth noting that he does not singularize each region into a cultural anthropological place but deconstructs each folktale¡¯s structure into plot elements and then mix them with different cultural anthropological(or colonial epistemological) clichés. As a result, the film makes itself a postmodern hybridized folktale. The virtue of this film is not Michel¡¯s presentation of recombined postmodern hybridity, but his strategy to expose the process of combination to the audience. With it, the film keeps its distance from theatrical universality as well as provides a self-reflective position to the director himself and the audience. (HWANG Miyojo)
